Proper foot care at home:

Do some ankle pumps while sitting, to keep the blood circulating.

Wash your feet when bathing

Be sure to clean between your toes with a washcloth.

Use warm water rather than hot water in your bath or shower.

Dry your feet well, be sure to dry in between your toes.

Inspect your feet daily for cuts, blisters, reddened areas, and swelling.

Inspect areas that are uncomfortable or are painful when walking.

Use a mirror to check the bottoms of your feet or ask a family member to help

Apply lotion to your feet and lower legs, as able.

Rub a thick coat of lotion over the tops and bottoms of your feet, but NOT between your toes

Apply lotion after bathing, or in the evening before bed.

Avoid walking barefoot.

Unprotected feet can easily be injured.

Footwear should have a firm, non-slip sole

Wear comfortable shoes that fit well and protect your feet.

Feel inside your shoes before each wear to be sure the lining is smooth and there are no objects inside.

Rotate your shoes so you are not wearing the same pair every day.

Elevate your legs when sitting.

Pay attention to your legs if prone to swelling

If sitting for an extended period, take a moment each hour to stand up and move around for a bit.
