HIV/AIDS

Should I Be Tested?

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, you should consider getting an HIV test.

~Have you injected drugs or steroids or shared equipment (such as needles, syringes, works) with others?

~Have you had unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with men who have sex with men, multiple partners, or anonymous partners?

~Have you been diagnosed with or treated for hepatitis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI), like gonorrhea, chlamydia, or syphilis?

~Have you have unprotected sex with someone who could answer yes to any of the above questions?

Why get tested?

*Early treatment can slow the progression of the virus and treatment reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to others.

*Knowing your status can help you protect your sexual or needle-sharing partners.

*If planning to become pregnant, it is important to know if you have the virus since it can pass to baby. A pregnant woman with HIV can take medication that will help lower the chance of passing HIV on to her baby.

The Marquette County Health Department provides rapid HIV testing, for additional questions or to make an appointment call (608) 297-3135.
