Mold

What is mold?
Molds reproduce from tiny spores. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on to survive. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

When excessive moisture or water accumulates indoors, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.

Should I Test for Mold?

Testing for mold is not necessary or recommended.  If you can see and smell it, you have a mold problem.  However, it is recommended that you do a thorough inspection to determine the cause of mold growth.  For a list of Mold Remediation Contractors please check this list for your county.

How can I minimize my exposure to mold?

Mold can be cleaned by removing the mold source and scrubbing the area with a bleach solution and allowing it to air dry. It is virtually impossible to remove all sources of mold from your home (nor is it necessary), but effective measures can be taken to prevent excessive mold growth.

  • Address moisture or water problems
  • A dehumidifier and/or air conditioner should be used to reduce indoor moisture levels during humid times of the year. Keep humidity levels no higher than 50% all day long.
  • Fix leaks or plumbing problems promptly
  • Ensure your home has ventilation fans in the bathroom and kitchen. Run bathroom fans for 20 minutes after showering
  • Do not carpet bathrooms
  • Clean bathrooms with mold-killing products such as bleach
  • Repair cracks in basement walls
  • Be sure air moves and flows freely throughout your home. Use exhaust fans to vent outside such as kitchen and bathrooms.  Also be sure clothes dryer vents outside.

How do I clean up mold?

Occasionally, mold can be found in the bathroom, on a windowsill, shower curtain, or wall.  This mold can be wiped off the surface with a damp cloth and cleaning agent (e.g. window or bathroom cleaner).  Preventing mold growth requires controlling the moisture source.  This may be as simple as using a dehumidifier or fixing a simple leak.  For larger mold problems (about 10 square feet), follow the three phases that are described in the Mold in Your Home: Cleaning Options
